Minecraft Ghast Pinata

Yeah that's right...
I. Made. A. Pinata.

Honestly, I really didn't have much of a choice.  My son wanted a Minecraft birthday party this year and NO ONE sells party supplies for it (seriously?).  This left me with two choices: buy a random pinata or make one myself.  After seeing the pinata that Megan created, I realized that making a Ghast would be the easier wiser choice. Many other characters in the game have a head, arms, legs, etc.; this is just a square, single-color blob with tentacles.  Easy enough.

Here's what you'll need:

12x12 cardboard box
packaging tape
scissors
zip tie
glue
tissue paper

To start, tape up the bottom of the box.  You need just enough tape to keep the bottom of the box from falling out, with all of that candy.  Next, cut off a piece from the lid as shown in the photo below.  Set it aside.

Cut out a flap, so that you can drop in the candy later.

Take the strip of cardboard that you previously sliced off and cut it into 3-4 smaller squares.  Use one of those pieces and place it on top of the lid, poking two holes through the small square and your lid.  You want the holes in between the center of the box lid and the edges of the small square.

Poke two holes through the remaining squares, using the original piece's spacing.  Stack the pieces together, position them underneath the box lid and run the zip tie through everything.

Fasten the zip tie and tape the top of the box shut.

Take a sheet of tissue paper, fold and cut off a 2 inch strip.  Cut slits all the way across the folded side of your strip.

Glue the strip along the bottom portion of one of the sides.

Continue cutting strips of tissue paper and gluing them, until you've covered the sides and top.

Glue on a few flat sheets of tissue paper to the bottom, to cover up the black print.  Then, cut a bunch of tissue paper strips and glue one end on along the bottom, so that they'll hang like little octopus tentacles.  Print the photo below, and cut-out the eyes and mouth.  Glue them to the front of your pinata.
Nailed it!

  1. Piñata a aren't something we have in New Zealand but my son wants a Minecraft party and this looks perfect. Are the noodle swords strong enough to break the box. I presume we out lollies inside and eventually the box breaks. I'd appreciate any more advice

    1. @Barney I'm not familiar with noodle swords, but one typically uses a baseball bat or wooden rod to break them. We used a ~1-inch wooden rod. You can put lollies, other candy or small toys if you want. Have fun!

  2. The cardboard box is not too hard for kids to brake it?

    1. @Letvia, It didn't even make it halfway through the line of kids before it died :)

  4. I like this pinata and I am going to do something similar for my son's party.
I just do not understand the step with the zip tie. Why is that necessary. Is it not enough to just tape the box?

    1. You need the zip tie, so you have something to loop your rope through (to hang the pinata). The extra pieces of cardboard are there to offer support, so that all of the pinata's weight isn't being put on the two holes in the lid.

  6. I used white streamers for the body instead of tissue paper. It's already cut into strip. Just FYI. :)

  8. I'm also doing a tnt box and plan on using red & white crepe paper streamers. We made a deathstar pinata last year, it turned out great! Definitely use extra support for rope under box lid, candy weighs more than I thought.

  9. Hi when I try to print out the ghast face, it is very small. Is there any way to make it larger? Maybe I am doing something wrong.
